Grace Coddington lends her signature whimsy (and cats) to Louis Vuitton’s travel line

Coddington’s cats lounge, stretch, and leap across the brand’s monogram—a play between French elegance and British eccentricity.

In her first collaboration with Louis Vuitton in 2018, Grace Coddington—legendary model, stylist, and creative director—said her Persian cat Pumpkin was the real star, having inspired the Louis Vuitton x Grace Coddington “Catogram” collection. It featured her whimsical drawings of Pumpkin and Blanche on LV monograms, trunks, and accessories.

Seven years later, LV invited Coddington and her feline companions—this time Blanche, Blanket, and Jimi—for another collaboration. Called “Louis Vuitton Travels with Grace Coddington,” the collection was recently released globally, and once again celebrates feline whimsy and wanderlust.

The former Vogue creative director known for her flame-red hair and feline obsession celebrates both the art of travel and the companionship of her cats. Included in the collection are versatile pieces with unique prints depicting her own adventurous spirit and her favorite companions.

Coddington’s love for cats has long been a defining part of her creative world—they are her muses, appearing in her illustrations, social media posts, and interviews. She often refers to them affectionately as her ”children” and her traveling companions.

Each piece in the collection tells a story with trunks hinting at adventure, silk scarves doubling as canvases for Grace’s hand-drawn cats, and footwear taking the cats places. The designs merge practicality with personality and lightweight materials for modern travelers and prints that reveal Coddington’s unmistakable wit.

Weaving dreams

Grace Coddington was born in Wales in 1941. She described the place where she grew up as “bleak,” but also said there was “beauty in its bleakness.” She first made her mark as a model in the 1960s, until a car accident cut her modeling career short.

She joined British Vogue as a junior fashion editor in 1968. “There was no such thing as a stylist, so the better your accessories, which you carried in your bag, the more jobs you were likely to get… But however well-equipped you might be, as with most situations in life, friends with influence are much more useful than face powder and rouge,” she wrote in Grace: A Memoir. 

By the time she became creative director of Vogue US in 1988 under Anna Wintour, who was her boss in the British edition, she had already earned a reputation as a fashion visionary who could transform clothing into cinematic storytelling. She helped create the visual identity of Vogue alongside photographers like Annie Leibovitz, Steven Meisel, and Peter Lindbergh.

She worked at Vogue for nearly three decades, shaping the magazine’s most memorable editorials—and became a pop culture icon herself after being featured in the 2009 documentary The September Issue, where her creative intensity and gentle defiance of Wintour’s pragmatism made her a fan favorite. She stepped down as creative director in 2016.

“I like fairy tales, and I like dreaming. I try to weave the reality into the dream,” she said in her memoir.

Coddington has always been the dreamer fashion editorials, the woman that produced visual poetry for decades. Her second collaboration with the brand and Louis Vuitton artistic director Nicolas Ghesquière  takes her on another dreamy trip with imaginative storytelling and—of course—her cats.
