Spider-Man: Brand New Day—what we know, fan theories, and what to expect

A record-breaking rollout, a lonelier Peter, and hints at what probably his darkest chapter yet

Marvel and Sony clearly knew exactly what they were doing with the rollout of the first Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer. Instead of dropping it all at once, the studios teased fans with bite-sized clips shared by members of the global Spider-Man fan community over 24 hours, before Tom Holland unveiled the full trailer during an Instagram Live from the Empire State Building in New York.

According to Sony, the trailer pulled in 718.6 million views in its first 24 hours, making it the biggest trailer launch the studio has ever had.

Picking up after No Way Home, with Peter starting from zero

The film is set four years after Spider-Man: No Way Home. At the end of that story, Peter chose to erase himself from everyone’s memory to protect the people he loves.

The trailer confirms that this decision still stands. MJ and Ned have no memory of him, and Peter remains on the outside looking in. Early scenes show him watching them from a distance, reinforcing that he has stayed away and fully committed to being Spider-Man without a personal life.

This version of Peter is more isolated than ever, operating alone in New York with no support system.

A return to street-level stakes, but with heavier threats

At the same time, the film pulls Spider-Man back into a more grounded setting.

Peter is shown living modestly, dealing with everyday struggles while continuing his role as a full-time hero. The threats around him reflect that shift. Scorpion returns, now fully suited up after being introduced years ago. The Punisher appears in multiple action sequences, clashing directly with Spider-Man. The Hand is also present, pointing to organized crime playing a larger role in the story.

The central conflict: Peter’s body is changing

The biggest plot detail in the trailer is not a villain, but Peter himself.

Several scenes show him undergoing a physical transformation. He wakes up inside a web cocoon that he did not create using his web shooters. Organic webbing appears to come directly from his body. His senses are heightened to the point of discomfort, and he begins to lose control in certain moments.

Bruce Banner appears and states that Peter’s DNA is “mutating,” confirming that this is not a normal progression of his powers.

This has led to comparisons with the “Man-Spider” storyline in the comics, where Peter’s abilities become unstable and more extreme. The trailer presents this transformation as both dangerous and unpredictable, suggesting it will be a major part of the film’s conflict.

A possible shift toward bigger MCU ideas

The use of the term “mutation” has raised questions about how the film connects to the wider MCU.

For years, the franchise avoided using that language directly. Here, it is part of the central conflict. This has led to speculation that Brand New Day may be setting up future storylines tied to the X-Men or similar concepts. At the same time, the trailer keeps the focus on Peter’s personal situation, suggesting that any larger connections will remain in the background for now.

MJ is still the story, whether she remembers or not

Even with everything else happening, the emotional center hasn’t shifted. It’s still MJ.

The trailer gives us just enough to hold onto. A glance. A moment. A possible reunion that feels loaded with everything Peter chose to give up. There’s a sense that something might still be there, even if the memory is gone.

Peter promised he would come back for her. The question now is whether he actually will—and what it will cost if he does.

What to expect from Brand New Day

Based on the trailer, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is positioning itself as a more grounded but more unstable chapter in Peter Parker’s story.

He is alone, dealing with the consequences of his previous choices, while also facing a physical transformation he does not understand. At the same time, he is pulled into conflicts with both street-level criminals and threats that may point to something larger.

Sadie Sink is confirmed to be part of the film, but her role remains undisclosed, and the trailer is clearly holding that reveal back. Given the scenes involving mind control and the ongoing “mutation” storyline, her character is widely expected to play a key role in the central conflict. Whether she is tied to a known character or something entirely new, her presence is one of the biggest unknowns heading into the film.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day arrives in cinemas on July 31, 2026.
