This time, she’s out to prove that absolute invincibility is in embracing the imperfections.
2026 is already looking up for fans of DC Comics, as a new hero is about to take flight in the DC Universe in a few months’ time. We’re talking about the kind, fierce, yet sometimes impulsive and rebellious Supergirl, Superman’s Kryptonian cousin.
If you watched James Gunn’s Superman last July, DC Studios and Warner Bros.’ recent announcement of the upcoming Supergirl film wouldn’t be much of a surprise. Supergirl, who is portrayed by House of the Dragon star Milly Alcock was introduced at the end of Superman as she retrieve her dog Krypto from her cousin Kal-El (David Corenswet).
Fans will soon be finding out a lot more about Supergirl, or Kara Zor-El, or Kara Danvers on planet Earth, as she’ll be starring in her own movie in 2026. The first trailer for the much-awaited flick flew onto the internet earlier today, and showed that this version of Zor-El will be far more complex than just the “female Superman” many think her to be.
The first few seconds of the clip present Kara celebrating her birthday in an intimate setting—in her bedroom and later in a bar all by herself (and a little bit of Krypto). This quickly changes to footages of the heroine battling out an army of villains with the extraordinary strength of Kryptonians and the power to zoom out of the Earth and into the galaxy.
Krypto appears as a constant presence in Kara’s struggles, not only in intergalactic battles, but also in identifying her identity and purpose while dealing with trauma and anger. The trailer infuses a dramatic tone into the heroine’s space adventures, suggesting that it’s a story that focuses on character development as much as visual spectacle.
Jason Momoa’s brief appearance as Lobo, a popular, anti-heroic alien bounty hunter, stood out as one of the trailer’s highlights discussed by fans. The action-packed clip sets the tone for the exciting film ahead, especially because this is the first time Supergirl is getting her own film since 1984, when veteran actress Helen Slater portrayed the titular character.
And although the trailer for 2026’s Supergirl already revealed a slew of significant plot points, there’s still so much to know about the blockbuster-hit-in-the-making before it lands in theaters in June 2026. Read on for everything you need to know.

What is Supergirl all about?

While DC Studios have been keeping the movie’s plot under wraps, it’s no mystery which era or characterization it’s drawing inspiration from. Since James Gunn took on the role of DC Studios’ CEO in 2022, with his partner Peter Safran leading the new DC Universe, they’ve been vocal that Supergirl will draw heavily from DC Comic’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
Written by Tom King and illustrated by Bilquis Evely, the 2021 comic book depicts Kara as a heroine shaped by trauma. The heroine was around 13 years old when Krypton exploded and has since been coping with the tragic memory, all while spending decades lost in the Phantom Zone before finally arriving on Earth.
The comic’s plot then follows Kara, who is now around 24 years old, as she tries to distance herself from Earth and any heroic responsibilities. The heroine finally steps into action when Ruthye, a young alien, calls on her to seek justice for her father’s murder at the hands of the barbarous Krem of the Yellow Hills.
From there begins a journey that blends western elements, brutal battles, sardonic wit, and a deep and visually stimulating exploration of life’s complexities. “If you’re a fan of the comic book, you’re going to love the movie,” Safran told Entertainment Weekly. “But it’s for a much broader audience, perhaps, than even the comic book. Director Craig’s stuff balances humor and pathos and emotion so well.”
Who is Supergirl in the DC Universe?

In most versions of the Supergirl story, Kara was sent out of Krypton to protect her then-baby cousin Kal-El (Superman). Her pod was launched before his, but her journey was disrupted when it was hit by a Kryptonite meteorite and knock her off into the Phantom Zone, a timeless dimension where time doesn’t pass. She eventually reached Earth years after Kal-El.
Similar to her superhero cousin, Kara possesses abilities like strength, speed, flight, heat vision, and near-invulnerability. Still, her identity stands out because they have opposing perspectives on life. Kara lived through Krypton’s destruction, which makes her more vulnerable, impulsive, and more of a realist. This was hinted in the upcoming film’s trailer, which ended with the heroine saying, “He sees the good in everyone, and I see the truth.”

Who is the cast of Supergirl?

Apart from Alcock who is carrying the cape of Supergirl, the film also stars Matthias Schoenaerts (The Old Guard) as the villain, Krem of the Yellow Hills, and Eve Ridley (3 Body Problem) as the young alien Ruthye.
David Krumholtz (Oppenheimer) and Emily Beecham (1899) are also set to play Supergirl’s Kryptonian parents, Zor-El and Alura In-Ze. They’re expected to appear in flashbacks or holographic cameos similar to Bradley Cooper and Angela Sarafyan in Superman.
Jason Momoa is making a comeback in the DC Universe not as the iconic Aquaman, but as the popular mercenary Lobo. This marks the first time an actor from a previous DC movie is crossing over to another film in a different role.
When will Supergirl premiere?
The DC Studios film Supergirl is scheduled to land in Philippine cinemas on June 24, 2026. The film is set for release slightly later in the United States, on June 26, 2026.
