The festival shows once more that it sets the tone for both film season and red carpet style.
The 2025 Venice Film Festival has begun, and the Lido is once again filled with stars, boats, and flashing cameras. The annual event opened on August 27 in Italy’s Floating City, and right away the red carpet came alive. Amal and George Clooney made an entrance by water taxi, with Amal glowing in a butter-yellow Balmain dress, while Cate Blanchett turned heads at in a plunging black Armani Privé gown.
And while the fashion is getting plenty of attention, the films themselves are just as stacked. Luca Guadagnino’s After the Hunt has Julia Roberts, Ayo Edebiri, and Andrew Garfield in a tense thriller about power, truth, and betrayal. Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein brings Jacob Elordi and Oscar Isaac into a reimagined version of the classic story, one that promises more heart than horror. Yorgos Lanthimos returns with Bugonia, pairing Emma Stone with Jesse Plemons and Alicia Silverstone in a dark, surreal adaptation of the Korean cult hit Save the Green Planet. Add Noah Baumbach’s Jay Kelly, featuring George Clooney and Adam Sandler, and you’ve got a slate that will likely shape awards season and eventually make its way to our cinemas and streaming queues.
