Chef Masahiko Kodama is back in PH working his yakitori magic

The yakitori master is now the chef-in-residence at Ginza Ortigas, serving his signature skewers at more accessible price points.

Celebrated yakitori chef Masahiko Kodama is catering to a new audience in a more casual setting this time. From 11 am to 3 pm daily, guests can try chef Kodama’s lunch-exclusive teishoku at Ginza Ortigas.

Teishoku is the Japanese traditional set meal that brings together a main dish with rice, soup, pickles, and small sides, each occupying its own place on the tray and contributing something different to the whole. There is protein, vegetables, carbohydrates, and plenty of contrast in flavor and texture, but teishoku is about more than nutritional arithmetic. It is an everyday way of eating in Japan because it’s simple, satisfying, and thoughtfully composed, proving that a complete meal doesn’t have to be complicated.

At Ginza Ortigas, diners can choose from the Soborodon Set, Yakitori Don Set, Yakitori Platter Set, and Kodama Ramen Set. Each teishoku includes starters, sides, the main dish of choice, and dessert, making it a complete and balanced meal for just P1,150+.

At dinnertime, guests can enjoy the Kodama Special Yakitori Platter Set, which comes with 15 sticks in total (two each of chef Kodama’s chicken skewers plus one veggie skewer). Priced at P2,400, the Yakitori Platter Set is good for two or more. A small robata grill accompanies the Yakitori Platter Set upon serving, allowing guests to reheat their skewers as they please.

Guests can also add à la carte plates of other Kodama signatures to an order of any Kodama teishoku or platter: Tori Liba Toast (chicken liver toast), Smoked Tori Salad (sous-vide chicken breast over garden salad), Jagaimo Kawa Salad (potato salad with onsen egg and crispy chicken skin), Kodama Ramen (chef Kodama’s ramen with chashu), Gohan with Kodama Tare (rice with chef Kodama’s signature tare sauce), and Kodama Special Pudding.

Kodama gained acclaim helming Tokyo restaurant Yakitori Masakichi, which had previously earned Michelin distinction and was featured in David Chang’s Ugly Delicious. His restaurant in the Philippines, The Counter at Ginza One (currently on hiatus), also gained recognition as part of Tatler Dining’s Top Restaurant Openings of 2024 and Tatler Best 2025, and Spot.ph’s 50 Great Restaurants of 2024.
