A Clueless reboot? Alicia Silverstone is all in

Thirty years after the cult classic, Cher Horowitz is about to make a return. And if Silverstone has her way, she’ll be rocking sustainable style.

It was in 1995 when the world was introduced to Cher Horowitz – a pretty and popular high school student from Beverly Hills with the closet of our dreams – in Clueless. The cult classic film is loosely based on Jane Austen’s Emma, and saw actress Alicia Silverstone, then an 18-year-old ingenue, cast in the role.

Cher’s yellow plaid suit has even found its place in fashion history as one of the most iconic looks in modern cinema. In the film, Cher finds herself playing matchmaker for her friends, while stumbling on to love along the way with her stepbrother, played by the charming Paul Rudd.

Fast forward to 2025, and it’s being reported by various news channels that a new series is in the works! Silverstone not only returns to the role that made her a household name, but will also executive produce the show, alongside Amy Heckerling (who wrote and directed the 1995 film) and Robert Lawrence.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, the actress shared that she is excited about the project, but work on the show is still in its early stages. “I never thought that was something that I would ever do because I wouldn’t wanna mess up this thing that we all love so much,’ she says in the clip posted on Instagram. “We will do our very best to honor the original movie that we love and also bring something new to it. That’s the goal…”

This will be the second run at a series for the iconic film, sans Silverstone, then also produced by Heckerling. Stacey Dash, who played Cher’s best friend Dee Davenport, and Donald Faison, who played Dee’s boyfriend Murray, starred on the show, and ran for three seasons,

Alicia Silverstone shares her thoughts on the Clueless series in development in a recent interview.

Taking on the writing reins, and bringing the show to life is power duo Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage. They are setting a high bar, having been the creative minds behind the hit series of the early aughts and the 2010s like The O.C., Gossip Girl, Nancy Drew, to name a few. The pair will also executive produce, along with Dollface creator Jordan Weiss, who will also be writing for the show.

In the years since working on Clueless, Silverstone went on to star to in a number of films, including The Babysitter, Blast From The Past, and Excess Baggage. You may also remember her from the music video for Aerosmith’s rock hit Crazy, in which she appeared with actress Liv Tyler. But in later years, she became more known for her work as an advocate for veganism, a lifestyle she adopted in the late ‘90s, and has carried over into a vegan lifestyle blog called The Kind Life. She is also a staunch advocate for animal welfare.

In the same interview clip with Entertainment Tonight, she said she is hoping to juxtapose some of these beliefs into this grown-up version of Cher, saying “I can’t wait to step back into Cher’s skin and her fancy designer shoes that will be gently used…because she’s evolved. This is 2025, she’s not wearing the new stuff unless it’s sustainable or vegan. We’ll have to see how far we can go with that.”

One of the iconic Clueless posters that many a teenager in the ’90s had hanging on their bedroom walls.

It may still be a while before Clueless makes it to our screens, but one thing is for sure — anyone who grew up in the ‘90s is eager to see what Cher is up to at this stage of her life. And we’re all going to be here for it.
