Oscars 2025: ‘Emilia Perez’ and ‘The Brutalist’ lead this year’s nominations

Netflix’s Emilia Pérez gets 13 nominations, including Best Picture and a historic Best Actress nod for Karla Sofía Gascón, the first trans actor to be nominated.

A lot of first-time acting nominees made the cut this year, including Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain), Demi Moore (The Substance), and Mikey Madison (Anora). Zoe Saldaña is in the spotlight with a Best Supporting Actress nomination, while Selena Gomez, who stars as Pérez’s wife, was left off the list. Right behind it are The Brutalist, a moody postwar drama, and Wicked, each with 10 nominations.

Sebastian Stan as Donald Trump

Timothée Chalamet (A Complete Unknown) and Sebastian Stan (The Apprentice) are vying for Best Actor with performances as Bob Dylan and Donald Trump, respectively. Oh, yes, that Donald Trump. Love it or hate it, Stan’s casting turned heads, and his commitment to the role could make him a dark horse in this category.

Of course, no Oscars list is complete without heartbreak. Dune: Part Two, Denis Villeneuve’s visually stunning sci-fi epic, may have racked up technical nods, but Villeneuve himself was notably left off the Best Director list. Similarly, Pamela Anderson’s buzzed-about performance in The Last Showgirl failed to secure a nomination, despite her Golden Globe nod.

And then there’s Gladiator II. While costume design earned it a spot at the table, the long-awaited sequel to Ridley Scott’s classic fell flat with voters, leaving stars Denzel Washington and Paul Mescal out of contention.
