His debut collection in March will show how he plans to merge his own approach with Balmain’s strong heritage.
Balmain has officially named Antonin Tron as its new creative director, taking over the role after Olivier Rousteing stepped down last week following 14 years with the house. The announcement comes at a time when many European luxury brands are experiencing slower consumer spending and rotating creative leads, making Tron’s appointment part of a larger shift across the industry.

From Atlein to Balmain
Tron, 41, is best known for Atlein, the Paris label he founded in 2016. The brand earned strong recognition for its draped jersey dresses, clean lines, and focus on movement and ease. With his move to Balmain, Tron will pause Atlein to focus entirely on the maison.
Balmain chief executive Matteo Sgarbossa said Tron’s design approach, which is rooted in draping and the physicality of fabric, aligns closely with founder Pierre Balmain’s belief that dressmaking should be an “architecture of movement.” Sgarbossa noted that Tron views fashion as a spatial art, working around the body with intention and emotion. The house expects him to continue Balmain’s strong identity.
Following Olivier Rousteing’s long tenure
Tron steps into a role shaped heavily by Rousteing’s influence. When Rousteing became creative director in 2011 at the age of 25, he was the first black designer to lead a major European fashion house. His tenure reshaped Balmain’s image through sharp, military-inspired silhouettes, heavy embellishment, and strong celebrity visibility. The “Balmain Army”—a group of high-profile personalities including Kim Kardashian, Gigi Hadid, and Kendall Jenner—played a major role in pushing the brand into mainstream culture.

In his statement, Tron thanked Olivier Rousteing for guiding Balmain to where it is today and said he is grateful for the chance to join the house. He described Balmain as a brand with a long and inspiring history, built on craft, culture, sensuality and elegance. Tron added that these values speak to him deeply, and that he is looking forward to contributing to the next phase of the maison.

Before launching Atlein, Tron studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, a school known for producing many of fashion’s most influential designers. His career includes time on the design teams of Louis Vuitton, Givenchy, Balenciaga, and Saint Laurent, giving him a wide range of experience across Paris’s major fashion houses. His work at Atlein earned him early support from industry leaders and awards such as the 2016 ANDAM Creative Brand Prize and the 2018 ANDAM Grand Prize.
