A sweet legacy

Läderach was founded in 1962 by Rudolf Läderach, Jr. in Glarus, Switzerland, and has been in the family for three generations. His dream was to create a “confectionery of sweet gifts.” In 1970, he would invent and patent a new way of making hollow balls for their scrumptious truffles. They went on to open their first store in 1981, supplying local businesses.

Rudolf eventually passed the reins on to his son Jürg in 1994, who would be the driving force taking Laderäch from one little family-run confectionery to 220 chocolateries in 25 countries all over the world. Leading the charge now are his sons Elias, a trained pastry chef and confectioner, and Johannes Läderach, as Chief Creative Officer, and Chief Executive Officer, respectively. Their brother, David, is on the board of directors.

Something to bark about

On their official website, the chocolatier describes their sweet treats as “freshly made in Switzerland” and “handcrafted with love” to create “moments of joy.” And yes, all that is felt from the moment you step into one of their stores, coming from a visit to the Laderäch store in Vienna, Austria. Shelves are filled to the brim with chocolate truffles and bites that are a cornucopia of flavors. Walk over to the main counter and see piles upon piles of FrischSchoggi, which resembles chocolate bark. Slabs of dark, white, or milk chocolate are inundated with all kinds of fruit, nut, and even cornflakes.

Two particularly tasty variants are the Raspberry-Blackberry White, and the Chili-Lemon Dark, but honestly, you can’t go wrong with any single one. Hopping on the Dubai chocolate trend, they’ve released the FrischSchoggi Dubai Milk. Now the question that remains is which of these tasty morsels will make it to their Manila store.

Santa, do take note

Now the only thing really left to do is wait. A few more weeks, that is. It is perfect timing for Läderach to make its presence felt, with the ‘ber months just around the corner. We can only hope that we find some FrischSchoggi and truffles under the tree for us come Christmas time. Santa, hope you’re listening!

The new lifestyle.
