First look: ‘Wicked’ starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo

Wicked, one of the most beloved and critically acclaimed musicals on Broadway, is finally making it on the silver screen! Scheduled as a two-part film, Wicked: Part One will hit cinemas this Thanksgiving, while the second part will be released on November 2025.

The fantasy film stars Emmy, Grammy, and Tony award-winning artist Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, and Grammy-winning, multi-platinum recording artist, and global pop superstar Ariana Grande as Glinda. A young woman who is misunderstood because of her green skin, Elphaba enters Shiz University with the desire to understand and harness her true power. Meanwhile, her fellow student Glinda is popular, privileged, and ambitious—and has yet to discover the nature of her true heart.

The film also stars Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh as Shiz University’s regal headmistress Madame Morrible; Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, a roguish and carefree prince; Tony nominee Ethan Slater as Boq, an altruistic Munchkin student; Marissa Bode in her feature film debut as Nessarose, Elphaba’s favored sister; and pop culture icon Jeff Goldblum as the legendary Wizard of Oz.

The cast of characters includes Pfannee and ShenShen, Glinda’s friends played by Emmy nominee Bowen Yang and Bronwyn James, and a new character created for the film, Miss Coddle, played by Tony nominee Keala Settle.

‘Wicked: Part One’ hits theaters on November 27, 2024. ‘Wicked’ is directed by Jon M. Chu, the creative force behind ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ and ‘In the Heights.’ It is produced by Marc Platt and David Stone, with David Nicksay, Stephen Schwartz and Jared LeBoff as executive producers.
