Score up to 80% off on selected titles at participating National Book Store branches.
January is coming to a close. Have you checked in on your New Year’s resolutions yet? Are you making progress? Or are you only starting to gain ground?
If “read more books” is one of your goals in 2024, you might want to check out National Book Store’s ongoing Sulit Reads New Year Book Fair at Robinson’s Galleria Ortigas. The fair, which runs until Feb. 4,has P99 books and up to 80% off on selected titles.
Book signing events with Filipino authors are also slated on weekends, with acclaimed historian and bestselling author Ambeth Ocampo gracing the fair last Sunday, Jan. 28. On Feb. 3, children’s book author Gail D. Villanueva and New York Times bestselling author Thea Guanzon will be at the event to sign books. Flutter Fic authors AnakNiRizal and Arrowheads, meanwhile, will have their book signing session on the last day of the fair.
Bookworms and bargain hunters can score fiction and young adult titles for as low as P99 each. For younger readers, Cocomelon, Paw Patrol, and other picture and activity books are available for as low as P149 each. On top of these great deals, hundreds of titles are up for grabs at P199 and P299 each.
If Robinson’s Galleria is not accessible for you, worry not as other National Book Store branches across the metro also carry discounted items. I checked out its SM North EDSA branch and was pleased to find great titles at discounted prices.
Madeline Miller’s bestselling book, The Song of Achilles, for instance, is only at P499. The Orange Prize for Fiction winner has been a consistent bestseller since it was published in 2011 and has sold two million copies across various formats as of July 2022.
Loved André Aciman’s Call Me by Your Name? Its sequel Find Me is only at P299 each.
If you’re a fan of young adult (YA) fiction writer Cassandra Clare, you’d be pleased to know that some of her titles such as City of Ashes, City of Glass, and Ghosts of the Shadow Market are at 80 percent off. The American author is best known for her bestselling series The Mortal Instruments.
Hardbound copies of The Mysterious Benedict Society and the Riddle of Ages by Trenton Lee Stewart and Cara Delevingne’s novel Mirror, Mirror, as well as the series tie-in edition of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials: The Golden Compass (paperback) are also on sale at 80 percent off.
If you’re into historical fiction, you can buy a hardbound copy of Hilary Mantel’s The Mirror and the Light at only P399. The novel is the final installment in her trilogy charting the rise and fall of Thomas Cromwell, a minister in the court of King Henry VIII.
Jagged Little Pill: You Live, You Learn by Alanis Morrisette and Diablo Cody (hardbound) can also be had at the same price. The book is a compilation of stories behind the iconic album and musical.
If you love reading biographies of famous people, you can score a hardbound copy of A Rather Haunted Life, a biography of the legendary writer Shirley Jackson by Ruth Franklin, at only P800 from its original price of P2,065.
Books under the Graphic Guides series—comic book-style introductions to humankind’s biggest ideas and thinkers—are now at only P149 each. Among the guides I saw at the SM North EDSA branch are those on Noam Chomsky, Stephen Hawking, Immanuel Kant, Aristotle, Plato, Jean-Paul Sartre, among others.
I was very happy to have come across a hardbound copy of celebrated chef, writer, and philanthropist José Andrés’ We Fed an Island for only P265, a huge 80 percent slashed off its original price of P1,325. The novel chronicles how Andrés and a group of chefs were able to feed hundreds of thousands of Americans in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria. This is my first sulit book buy of the year and I can’t wait to start reading it as a huge José Andrés fan.
Aside from discounted books, National Book Store also has a Back to Office and Planner Caravan which offers discounts and freebies on 2024 planners, writing instruments, and many more bargain deals.
Among the participating branches in the caravan are Festival Supermall, Glorietta 1, Quezon Avenue, Robinsons Galleria Ortigas, SM Fairview, SM Megamall, SM North EDSA, SM San Lazaro, Superbranch Cubao, and Trinoma. The caravan runs until Feb 25.
