Blue, yellow, and borderless: Why IKEA Philippines is IKEA Global’s Store of the Year

IKEA Pasay City showcases the best of Filipino retail culture.

Inside the sprawling interiors of IKEA Pasay City, Swedish staples have long become a lasting fixtures for Filipino families. Recently, the store received a prestige that proves why IKEA in the Philippines is a distinguished retail destination. It became a showcase of how local sensibility, global standards, and graceful living can intersect on an international caliber.

Among 470 IKEA branches worldwide, IKEA Philippines officially won IKEA Store of the Year 2025—one of the company’s highest citations globally. For a store grounded in the Philippines and is not even five years old, the feat extends national admiration in brilliant fashion. It further reflects how lifestyles, retail behaviors, and community-building values managed to venture beyond national borders.

At the May 14 celebration of IKEA PH’s latest commendation, IKEA Pasay transformed its Swedish Restaurant into a Hall of Fame introducing who’s behind the breakthrough: its co-workers and customers. Guests Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach-Jauncey, Olympic gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz, Michelin-starred chef Josh Boutwood, and local music legend Bamboo shared in the commemoration, too.

Spanning approximately 65,000 to 68,000 square meters across five floors at the Mall of Asia Complex, IKEA Pasay City remains the largest IKEA in the region—and the biggest branch in the world. The high-capacity complex houses showrooms, mock-up spaces, warehouses, fulfillment facilities, restaurants, and logistics routes built to support both online and offline shopping systems.

For Daniel Rivero, Store Manager of IKEA Pasay City, the recognition becomes a real benchmark when viewed beside IKEA’s vast global footprint. “To understand what this means—the size of this award—I would like to mention that Germany has 55 large stores; the US has 52 large stores; trhe UK, 22; France, 36; Italy, 23; and China, 35. In total, we have 470 large stores worldwide in 63 countries.”

The accolade, however, was not a measure of numbers alone. Rivero explains that IKEA Global evaluates operational excellence, overall customer satisfaction, and the ability of a store to localize IKEA’s principles of living according to the attitudes of its community: “Equally important is how we present the range and adapt it to the Filipino market—to cover their needs, but also, to cover their dreams.”

Moreover, Ambassador of Sweden to the Philippines Anna Ferry brands the relationship between the two countries as a true, “perfect match,” emphasizing shared ethos rooted in care, community, responsible living, and family life. “We do care for each other. We care for kids, families,” she mentioned, adding that IKEA acts as a platform that provides equal opportunities for everyone.

Pasay City Mayor Imelda Gallardo Calixto-Rubiano highlights the connection between the city and the beloved home retailer. “IKEA plus Pasay City equals winning combination,” she remarks, noting that when a Nordic powerhouse combines with the passion of the Philippines, creative things are possible. The township leader also lovingly praised the food and product offerings of the Philippine outlet.

Before ending her message with an expression of bold support to the store, she urged IKEA to contribute unceasingly to the country, offering her unwavering openness and cooperation in case the organization reaches out to her for resources in the future. She states firmly: “Let us change more homes into their best versions—one IKEA item at a time.”

Across the program, one philosophy appeared brightly spoken beneath the speeches: togetherness. Rivero repeatedly thanked his roster and credited the recognition to the co-workers behind the win. “I take the moment to also thank the team—our co-workers, our leaders who have made this possible,” he beams. “Togetherness is an important IKEA value, and IKEA Pasay is a good example of that.”

For Ricardo Pinheiro, Country Retail Manager of IKEA Philippines, the success represents something greater than global success. “This is the Miss Universe for IKEA,” he declares. “This award is not just about performance. It’s about excellence in operations—in everything we do. It’s about customer satisfaction with our products and with our solutions. It’s also co-worker engagement and co-worker satisfaction.”

Reflecting on the recognition beyond retail benchmarks, Pinheiro also added that the Philippine team’s culture of resilience, collaboration, and consistency deeply contributed to the distinction: “The Philippines inspired us: the spirit of resilience and collaboration; the can-do attitude; people lifting each other, moving forward together.”

For a relatively young retail branch, the accomplishment became almost poetic in scale: a Philippine store outperforming older counterparts across countries in Europe, North America, and Asia. Even Pia Wurtzbach-Jauncey’s reflections echoed the milestone’s quieter message about appreciating success beyond spectacle.

“You know, it’s not always the big moments,” she shares. “Nowadays, I also find my winning moments in quieter, more introspective moments,” the Miss Universe 2015 titleholder thoughtfully says. “I’ve actually built my first home, and I’m still in the process of fixing it up and rebuilding it. That’s why being here at IKEA also is very exciting because then, I get to pick out some stuff.”

That sentiment, too, mirrors why the recognition is a meaningful reminder. Besides being a prestigious global plaque, IKEA Pasay City’s unexpected victory ultimately reflects how home itself remains comforting, emotional, and communal. Wurtzbach-Jauncey elaborates, “Those moments actually feel like winning moments, too. You enjoy your hard work and being able to slow down and really reflect and just enjoy life.”
