Mooncakes are looking especially creative this year.
This Mid-Autumn Festival, mooncakes are taking travelers well beyond the familiar lotus paste and salted egg yolk. Across Hong Kong, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, the season’s most creative versions arrive filled with molten custard, dark chocolate, durian, bird’s nest and even whisky, often presented in boxes designed to become lanterns, bags or keepsakes.

Hung Huat Cakes and Pastries

This third-generation family bakery began as a humble pushcart in 1976. It is best known for handmade Teochew mooncakes with beautifully crisp pastry layers. The 2026 flavors give that traditional style a playful update. Look for pistachio with dark chocolate ganache, Hokkaido milk with mochi, Turkish pistachio lava and Uji matcha custard.
Janice Wong
Janice Wong’s mooncake box doubles as a wooden lantern and comes with eight baked mooncakes, a ceramic plate and matching forks.

Flavors include hibiscus yuzu and milk oolong with bergamot peel. Her hand-painted chocolate mooncakes are equally striking, especially the yuan yang, brown-rice tea and hazelnut combination and the pistachio, yuzu and salted caramel creation.
Goodwood Park Hotel

The Jade Bunny set at Goodwood Park Hotel contains six rabbit-shaped mooncakes that should charm adults and children alike. More adventurous choices include durian with kunafa and avocado with gula Melaka, available together in the Double Indulgence set. Pink guava with jambu offers something lighter and fruitier.
Raffles Hotel Singapore

Raffles takes the cocktail route with snowskin mooncakes flavored with whisky and lapsang souchong, baijiu and black sesame, or its signature Champagne truffle. The limited baked mooncake set is made for serious collectors. It includes ceramic plates and gold-plated dessert cutlery, turning the gift into a complete Mid-Autumn table setting.
Singapore Marriott Tang Plaza Hotel

Wan Hao Chinese Restaurant has created one of the season’s boldest mooncakes: black truffle, 24-month dry-aged Parma ham, pistachio, white lotus paste and salted yolk. Dessert lovers can also choose snowskin flavors such as sea-salt chocolate with Baileys praline or matcha with balsamic strawberry praline.

Its standout creation combines bird’s nest, dragon fruit and pecans inside mint, dragon fruit and orchid-infused snowskin. Other choices include Musang King durian, black sesame with almond, and white lotus with palm sugar, macadamia and seaweed. Traditional baked flavors are also available for anyone craving the classics.
Putrajaya Marriott Hotel

Putrajaya Marriott Hotel lets you customize a four-piece box. Every set contains white lotus with a single yolk and a mixed-nut mooncake. You can then select two additional flavors: Red Bean Mochi, Matcha Red Bean, Chocolate Lava or Durian Musang King. It is a handy choice when your travel group includes both purists and adventurous eaters.
Mei by Fat Spoon x Chocolate Concierge\

Mei by Fat Spoon, a KL favorite known for Japanese-inspired comfort food, has teamed up once again with local tree-to-bar chocolatier Chocolate Concierge. Crafted in small batches using Malaysian single-origin cacao, the mooncakes come in Genmaicha Mochi, Mango in Dark, Black Sesame Crunch and Red Bean Matcha—an appealing Mid-Autumn alternative for chocolate lovers.
Mooncakes may be made for sharing, but nobody said you could not bring an extra box home. Just leave enough room in your suitcase. Also the packaging might be far too pretty to abandon.
