Jacobs’ references span more than 35 years of creative history, from Junya Watanabe to Yves Saint Laurent. At the heart of it all is a surprisingly simple theme: gratitude.
“In learning how to better recognize abundance, even in life’s most uncertain moments… creating, as an act of gratitude, is my truest form of self-expression,” Jacobs writes in the show’s notes, describing creativity as a way of giving back to the people, experiences, and moments that have quietly held his life together.
It’s a refreshing sentiment in an industry often driven by relentless reinvention. Instead of pretending every idea arrives in isolation, Jacobs acknowledges that every collection stands on invisible foundations laid by others.

His references span more than 35 years of creative history. Under the heading “Credits and Receipts,” he acknowledged the creative lineage behind the collection, tracing a path across five decades of fashion, film, and performance. There is Yves Saint Laurent’s Love collection from 1970, Bob Fosse’s dazzling and deeply introspective All that Jazz (1979), Chanel’s exuberant Spring/Summer 1993 show, and Saint Laurent’s own Spring/Summer 1993 collection.
Experimental Japanese designer Junya Watanabe’s Spring/Summer 1996 work also appears alongside Jacobs’ own Spring/Summer 1998 and 2000 collections, followed by Prada’s influential Spring/Summer 2007 presentation and his Louis Vuitton Spring/Summer 2009 collection.

Few designers have reshaped American fashion as consistently. In 2001, Jacobs helped blur the line between luxury and accessible fashion with the launch of Marc by Marc Jacobs, expanding the brand beyond runway collections into a global lifestyle label encompassing ready-to-wear, accessories, footwear, jewelry, watches, eyewear, technology, and fragrance.
Yet his Spring 2027 suggests that after decades of influencing fashion himself, Jacobs is just as interested in acknowledging those who influenced him first.

Perhaps that is the collection’s most powerful statement. Jacobs presents that every designer is shaped by mentors, masterpieces, memories, films, performances, and collections that came before. The result is not simply another seasonal runway show. It is a reminder that creativity is rarely a solitary act. It is an accumulation of encounters, inspirations, and acts of generosity passed from one creator to the next.
