These five tips will help you get rid of dull, frizzy hair and achieve the glossy, commercial-worthy locks we all admire.
One thing about the hair of celebrities? They look so good whenever, wherever. Whether they’re sashaying down the red carpet or capturing their “woke up like this” look, their hair glows and bounces differently.
For the average person, their hair can either make or break their day. It can be shiny and soft one day and flat or frizzy the next—and that’s also depending on the weather. Good news is that achieving luscious celebrity-like hair isn’t rocket science.
A few tips and tricks can help you get rid of dull, frizzy hair and achieve glossy, commercial-worthy locks. Take it from some of the top hair experts that were present at the launch of Watsons’ “Flip It, Flaunt It” campaign last July 16.
At the event attended by The POST at SM Mall of Asia, local hair experts Matt Ledesma, Mark Rosales, Junie Sierra, and Mike Feliciano gave the lowdown on how you can achieve—and flaunt—shiny and healthy hair you see on TV, magazines, and billboards.

Whether your goal is to boost your hair health or dazzle with long, gorgeous hair on Instagram, these easy tips can bring your dream hair transformation to life.

Never ever skip the conditioner

While most shampoos today come with advanced formulas that cleanse the hair and remove dirt, they’re still not enough to give you luscious locks. These hair cleansers can also strip your hair of its natural oils. That is why Junie Sierra, hairstylist and The Bloc Salon CEO, agrees: Conditioner is always a good idea.
“Shampooing without conditioner can damage your hair,” he said. Conditioner helps replenish your hair’s moisture, smooth its cuticle (the outermost layer of your hair), and prevent damage. Without it, you’re likely to end up having dry, tangled, and frizzy hair. And when it comes to rinsing your hair, Sierra recommends using cold water as “it can seal the cuticle of your hair.”
“Hot water damages our hair’s cuticle and can give us a hard time combing our hair later. And when that happens, your hair is more likely to be prone to breakage,” he continued. “That is why we always tell our clients that if you’re rinsing your hair with hot water after shampooing, make sure that you use cold water after the conditioner.”
Ditch the hot hair tools if you can

Need to dry your hair in an instant? Think twice before grabbing your hair dryer, flat iron, or hot air brushes. If you have healthy locks—free of damage, well-moisturized, and have a natural elasticity—air drying is still the way to go, according to hair stylist and Marqed Salon owner Mike Feliciano.
“However, if you don’t have healthy hair, air drying will make it flat or frizzy. At the same time, using a blow dryer can damage the hair,” he added. Sierra attested to this, saying, “Using hot tools, or anything with direct heat, automatically damages your hair.”
Don’t fret, though, if you’re among those with dry, dull, or damaged hair and are always in a hurry to step out. If you’re left with no option but to use a hair dryer, Sierra suggests using heat protectant sprays that are designed to maintain your hair’s strength, elasticity, and overall health.

Regular trimming goes a long way

Anyone would agree—dry, frizzy, or split ends can be a turn-off. Frayed or damaged hair tips make the hair look unhealthy and unkempt—something you wouldn’t want, especially for a first impression. That is why celebrity hair stylist Matt Ledesma recommends having regular trims at your favorite salon.
Getting a trim every six to eight weeks helps prevent split ends and breakage, which can hinder hair growth and make your locks appear frizzy. “Focus on the health of your hair instead of just forcing it to grow long,” Ledesma told The POST. “If split ends are not cut, they’ll just damage your hair and (make it) difficult to style and manage later.”
Upgrade your look with balayage and waves

New hair color should definitely be part of your glow-up, as the right hue can brighten your skin tone, highlight your features, and make you appear more youthful. Ledesma recommends opting for a balayage, a coloring technique that creates a natural, sun-kissed look by hand-painting highlights on your strands.
“It’s something you can incorporate with your natural hair color, and it grows out a lot softer,” he said. “And to make the colors pop up, style your hair with curls—beach waves, textured waves—that’s trending and, at the same time, timeless.” For a more natural look, Ledesma suggests getting a Brazilian blowout, which will reduce your hair’s frizz instead. Top it up with a hair mask treatment once a month to keep your hair nourished and hydrated.
Add volume with the right products

Volume and fullness ultimately differentiate what society deems “average” hair from luscious, celebrity-like locks. “A lot of times, when I style people’s hair, their hair falls flat. So I think it’s really important to use the right products to achieve big, voluminous hair and hair that moves,” Ledesma told The POST.
For his celebrity clients, the hairstylist uses products that add “volume and texture” from brands like Kérastase, L’Oreal, and Color Wow. Hair extensions, he said, are also key to adding both volume and movement to the hair. “For frizzy hair, my go-to is leave-on conditioner, hair oil, and serum. I mix them all together, lather the mixture on my hair, and comb it through,” he added.
