Germanier Paris Fashion Week 2024

Germanier turns waste into vibrant extravaganza at Paris Fashion Week

When Kevin Germanier took on the challenge of designing the costumes for the closing ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics, the renowned designer had one thing in mind — to show the world that the city is indeed the capital of fashion.

A month later, the 32-year-old couturier is still championing his mission, and this time, at the 2024 Paris Fashion Week. His namesake label, on Sept. 24, showcased a collection that transforms waste into a show-stopping fashion extravaganza.

Popular for his sustainable approach to fashion, Germanier described his spring-summer 2025 collection as “a fashion trash heap and what you can do with it.” Besides sustainability, the collection is, first and foremost, created with the art and craft of storytelling.

“My previous shows were driven by the materials I’d found but what the Olympics taught me is the power of storytelling,” he told journalists at the show’s press conference.

The collection is titled “Les Désastreuses” which, according to WWD, is a play on the word disaster and a French term for stars, inspired by the zodiac. “It’s a bit cheesy but you don’t get anywhere if you balk at a theme you’re familiar with,” he remarked.

Each look personifies the unique characteristics of each zodiac sign. It also carries Germanier’s style of glittery, multicolored spectacles and beaded creations that previously caught the eye of stars like Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, and Lady Gaga.

(Above and below) Germanier’s innovative creations are made out of unlikely materials like party ribbons or rubber flip-flops.

All 24 innovative creations were unveiled in chronological order during Tuesday’s event, with each one being made from upcycled materials like plastic curtains, rolls of party ribbons, fluffy retro wigs, and a stack of colorful Havaianas flip-flops. They are bedecked with sequins, glitters, and sparklers in true Germanier fashion.

Among the most talked-about ensembles is the one embodying the sign of Scorpio. The look comprises reels and reels of VHS tapes, which were also the same cassettes worn by pianist Alain Roche during his suspended performance at the Paris Olympics.

Scorpio’s look consists of VHS tape films from Germanier’s childhood.

For Pisces, Germanier weaved together heaps of giant misprinted holographic sequins to create a sparkling hooded mermaid dress. The finale is a sun-themed masterpiece made of “cheap tinsel wrapped on a plastic mannequin.”

The Swiss designer’s latest collection is not just a masterclass on upcycling, it is also an avenue for exercising the brand’s philosophy that fashion is a means to develop and showcase promising talent.

Among the rising stars that Germanier teamed up with is Kevin Pascual Martinez for the ensemble inspired by Uranus. Martinez’s school project about the brand impressed Germanier, so much so that he was called to collaborate on this new collection. There’s also Brazilian designer Gustavo Silvestre who, like Germanier, is an advocate of sustainable fashion. He has been a loyal partner of the brand, collaborating on several looks in the past.

Apart from his new collection, Germanier’s latest fashion show introduced its new flagship bag called Trésorium, or treasury in English. “All this is a creative vision, but the bread and butter are the purses,” he said. The collection comprises 12 beaded shoulder bags with different designs that likewise represent each astrological sign.
