Must-have pieces from Louis Vuitton and Takashi Murakami’s playful 2025 collection

Ring in 2025 with color and Y2K nostalgia through this coveted collection, set to drop Jan. 3.

2025 is finally upon us, and for luxury fashionistas, it is only natural to ring in the next 365 days with a new set of handbags. Louis Vuitton is all set to give you a fresh, not to mention charming, start as the French fashion powerhouse has teamed up with Japanese artist Takashi Murakami for a new and vibrant collection this year.

LV first announced the collab on Dec. 3 as a re-edition of its 2003 partnership with the renowned contemporary artist. Their first collaboration has been touted as one of the most successful partnerships in fashion history, setting the benchmark for collaborations between luxury brands and artists. It turned Louis Vuitton’s classic and refined fashion items into wearable works of art, making it a coveted brand for young consumers who wanted to reflect individuality and optimism in their choices in fashion.

Pietro Beccari, chairman and chief executive officer of Louis Vuitton, said that it is with the same purpose that they have decided to reunite with Murakami two decades after their first collaboration.

“Young people are reviving that era, and we want to connect with them through this re-release,” Beccari told ART News. “We wanted to reach out to the generation who is not yet familiar with that collaboration, but who loves what was done 20 years ago and more recently with the Monogramouflage,” he added

The 2025 collection is the rebirth of Murakami’s multicolored motif from 2003, paying homage to the partnership’s rich history and bold vision put into motion by then-Louis Vuitton creative director Marc Jacobs and now, by Beccari and Louis Vuitton Men’s creative director Pharrell Williams.

This collection to look out for is an expansive rendition of the previous one and now spans over 200 handbags, footwear, and accessories. The lineup is fronted by the Monogram Multicolore—Murakami’s iconic interpretation of the Monogram with floral motifs in 33 different colors. Just like the first collaboration, the Monogram Multicolore now appears on a white background on many of Louis Vuitton’s emblematic bags, including the Speed 25, Dauphine Soft, Alma BB, and Keepall.

On a black background, the motif adorns pieces such as the OnTheGo and Speedy 30 Soft bags, and Art of Travel luggage. The iconic motif also perks up small leather goods, belts, sunglasses, bucket hats, and silk carrés.

Aside from the Monogram Multicolore, the 2025 re-edition brings back beloved motifs like the Cherry Blossom and Superflat Panda, also known as Murakami’s bear “Tan Tan Bo.” The whimsical panda comes to life on the OnTheGo PM Chain and Alba BB bags, as well as the majestic Courier Lozine 110 Fleurs trunk.

The Superflat Panda is also present in playful accessories like a keyring and skateboard. The whimsical character and Superflat Garden symbols both jazz up Louis Vuitton footwear, travel essentials, and other accessories. Murakami’s Superflat Panda and Superflat Garden are also taking over perfumes like the Attrape-Rêyes and Imagination, while the Monogram Multicolore enhances fragrance trunks.

The first edition of the Louis Vuitton x Murakami collab was glamourized by the “it” girls of the early 2000s, neither is this year’s re-edition cutting down on its much-needed star power. For its 2025 collab, Louis Vuitton has tapped its house ambassador and multi-awarded actress, Zendaya, to bring more life to the campaign.

In the images posted on the brand’s Instagram account since Dec. 27, Zendaya is seen sporting some of the re-edition’s coveted items, including the All in BB, Speedy 25, and Capucines Mini bags. In true Murakami fashion, the Dune and Spider-Man star is green-screened on psychedelic backdrops of city skylines, roller coasters, and parks mixed with Murakami’s vibrant floral motifs and Superflat characters.

Zendaya adds more color to the Louis Vuitton x Murakami re-edition collection as the coveted capsule’s ambassador.

Murakami said that he has been a fan of the actress, who was only seven years old when the collaboration was first launched. This is also why the 62-year-old artist is pleased that she is now the face of the line.

“It’s like what I had imagined back then, the children seeing that collaboration in anime, growing up with them, have now become the new fans of the brand. That’s what I was hoping for and it’s becoming a reality, so I’m really glad,” Murakami told ART News

The Louis Vuitton x Murakami re-edition collection will be released in two drops, with the first chapter hitting shelves and online on Jan. 3. The second chapter will be released in March, focusing on Murakami’s Cherry Blossom motif.
