The Southeast Asian region remains a melting pot of cultural landmarks, historical districts, and heritage-rich destinations.
Vietnam has secured two spots in Tripadvisor’s latest list of Asia’s most popular attractions, reinforcing the country’s growing appeal among international travelers seeking heritage, history, and cultural experiences.
According to Tripadvisor’s 2026 Travelers’ Choice Awards: Best of the Best Things to Do, Hoi An Ancient Town and the War Remnants Museum were among the region’s 10 highest-rated attractions based on traveler reviews and ratings collected over a 12-month period. The recognition places Vietnam alongside some of Southeast Asia’s most visited landmarks, including Angkor Wat in Cambodia, Gardens by the Bay in Singapore, the Petronas Twin Towers in Malaysia, and Bangkok’s historic temple complexes.

The annual awards draw from millions of user-generated reviews on Tripadvisor, one of the world’s largest travel guidance platforms. The company notes that less than one percent of its more than eight million listed attractions, accommodations, and tourism businesses receive the “Best of the Best” distinction each year. For Vietnam, the ranking highlights two very different visitor experiences.
Located in Quang Nam Province, Hoi An Ancient Town remains one of the country’s most recognizable destinations. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is known for its preserved merchant houses, pedestrian-friendly streets, riverside setting, and blend of Vietnamese, Chinese, and Japanese architectural influences dating back centuries. Long considered a tourism anchor in central Vietnam, the destination continues to attract both first-time and returning visitors seeking a slower, culture-focused travel experience.

Meanwhile, the War Remnants Museum in Ho Chi Minh City offers a more historical perspective. Established in 1975, the museum documents the impact of conflict through photographs, archival materials, military artifacts, and educational exhibits. It has become one of Vietnam’s most visited museums, drawing travelers interested in understanding the country’s modern history beyond its beaches and urban centers.

The inclusion of both sites suggests that cultural and historical attractions remain highly competitive in an increasingly crowded regional tourism landscape. While Southeast Asia is often associated with tropical islands, luxury resorts, and natural scenery, Tripadvisor’s rankings indicate sustained interest in destinations that offer historical context and local identity.
The broader Top 10 list reflects the diversity of experiences travelers continue to prioritize across the region. Cambodia’s Angkor Wat and Bayon Temple represent some of Southeast Asia’s most significant archaeological sites, while Singapore’s Gardens by the Bay and Singapore Botanic Gardens showcase urban green spaces that have become major tourism draws. Thailand’s Wat Pho and Wat Arun, Malaysia’s Petronas Twin Towers, and Indonesia’s Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary also made the regional ranking.
Industry observers have increasingly noted a shift toward experience-driven travel, where visitors seek destinations that combine storytelling, authenticity, and cultural immersion. Heritage districts, museums, and historical landmarks have benefited from this trend, particularly as travelers look for experiences that extend beyond sightseeing alone.

For Vietnam, the recognition arrives amid continued growth in international tourism and rising global visibility for its cultural destinations. While beach destinations and culinary tourism remain major contributors to visitor arrivals, rankings such as Tripadvisor’s suggest that the country’s historical and heritage assets continue to play an important role in shaping its tourism appeal.
As competition among Southeast Asian destinations intensifies, the latest results underscore how cultural preservation and historical interpretation are becoming just as valuable to travelers as modern attractions and resort developments. In Vietnam’s case, two of its most enduring landmarks have once again demonstrated their ability to resonate with a global audience.
