The dresses, jury, and red carpet moments at Cannes 2026 so far

A closer look at this year’s ongoing festival, the updated dress code, and the celebrity outfits already turning heads on the promenade.

The 79th Cannes Film Festival kicked off on May 12 and runs through May 23, opening with Pierre Salvadori’s French period film The Electric Kiss at the Grand Théâtre Lumière. Out of 2,541 feature films submitted this year, 22 are competing for the Palme d’Or, and only two of them are American. South Korean director Park Chan-wook is leading the jury, the first Korean filmmaker to do so, taking over from Juliette Binoche who held the role last year. Alongside him are Demi Moore, Chloé Zhao, Stellan Skarsgård and Ruth Negga.

Honorary Palme d’Ors will also be handed to Peter Jackson and Barbra Streisand. On top of all that, Mike White is filming season four of The White Lotus, with the festival serving as the setting for the new chapter of his HBO satire.

This year’s dresscode

Last year, organizers caught everyone off guard by releasing a stricter dress code on the morning of opening day. Sheer dresses, naked dressing, huge volumes and long trains all out. This year, the rules were not spelled out as loudly, but they are still part of the official festival charter.

Women are asked to wear long dresses, while tuxedos are expected for men. A little black dress, a cocktail look, a dark pantsuit or a dressy top with black trousers are all fine too. Sneakers are still off the table, but elegant sandals with or without heels are welcome. For the men, a black or navy suit with a bow tie also works.

Plenty of guests pushed against these rules last year, like Heidi Klum with her dramatic ruffled train or Bella Hadid in a daring high slit. This year, with everyone aware of the guidelines, the looks on Boulevard de la Croisette feel more in tune with the new tone, while still leaving room for personality.
