Apple announced a smarter Siri, new iPhone and Mac updates, stronger child safety tools, and a cleaner software look
Apple’s biggest software event of the year was all about making its devices feel smarter and easier to use.
At WWDC 2026, Apple introduced its next major updates for the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Apple TV, and Vision Pro. That includes iOS 27 for iPhones, iPadOS 27, watchOS 27, tvOS 27, visionOS 27, and macOS 27 Golden Gate for Macs.
But the biggest headline is Siri.
After years of being treated like the assistant you only call when you need a timer, or in my case—I use it to play songs but even on that it doesn’t get the exact one I’d like to hear—Siri is getting a major upgrade.
Apple introduced Siri AI, a new version of the voice assistant that is designed to understand people better, answer more naturally, and help across apps.

Siri AI is Apple’s smarter version of Siri.
Instead of only answering basic questions, the new Siri can understand more context. That means it can help with what is on your screen, work with photos, answer follow-up questions, and assist with writing.

Apple also says Siri AI can take action across apps. For example, it may be able to help find information, write something for you, or complete a task without needing you to jump from app to app.
The new Siri will not be available to everyone right away. Apple says Siri AI will arrive later this year, starting in English. It will also not be available in the European Union on iOS and iPadOS at launch.
For everyday iPhone users, this could be one of the most useful updates, if it works as smoothly as Apple says it will.

iOS 27 makes everyday apps smarter
Apple also announced iOS 27, the next big software update for iPhones.
The update brings more Apple Intelligence features into apps people already use every day. Messages and Mail will have better reply suggestions. Calendar can help create events from more natural instructions. Shortcuts can now be made by simply describing what you want your phone to do.

Safari is also getting smarter tools, while the Passwords app can help users deal with unsafe or compromised passwords.
Apple is cleaning up the Liquid Glass look
Apple is also adjusting its Liquid Glass design, the clear and glossy software style it introduced across its devices.
Some users found the look too transparent or hard to read. With the new updates, Apple is adding more controls so people can adjust how clear or tinted the design appears. That means menus, toolbars, and sidebars should be easier to read while still keeping Apple’s newer visual style.
Parents are getting more child safety controls

Apple also announced new safety tools for families.
Parents will be able to manage child accounts more easily, approve apps, and adjust what children can access over time.
Apple is adding a new Communication Safety tool that can help protect children and teens from seeing sensitive photos or videos, including nudity or graphic content.
These tools will be available across Apple devices, which should make it easier for parents to manage safety settings from one ecosystem.
macOS 27 Golden Gate is the next Mac update

For Mac users, the next big update is called macOS 27 Golden Gate.
The update brings Siri AI and more Apple Intelligence features to the Mac. These tools will work across parts of the desktop, including Finder, Spotlight, screenshots, documents, Safari, Calendar, and Shortcuts.
Apple says the goal is to make the Mac easier to use, especially when searching for files, writing, organizing tasks, or asking for help.
One thing Mac users should check is that macOS 27 Golden Gate is only for newer Macs with Apple Silicon chips, starting from M1. Older Intel Macs will not be able to update to this version.
Developer betas are available, but regular users should wait
Apple has already released developer beta versions of iOS 27, macOS 27 Golden Gate, and its other new software updates.
However, most users should wait before installing them. Developer betas are early versions made for app makers and testers. They can have bugs, battery problems, and apps that may not work properly.
The public beta is expected later, while the official versions of Apple’s new software updates should arrive later this year.
Tim Cook’s final WWDC as Apple CEO
WWDC 2026 also marked Tim Cook’s final WWDC keynote as Apple CEO.

Cook has led Apple since 2011, taking over after Steve Jobs. During his time as CEO, Apple grew through products like the Apple Watch, AirPods, and newer generations of the iPhone.
