Whether it’s standing in plain sight or tucked from the public eye, the place boasts new and novel tastes without abandoning tradition.
Cebu City constantly surprises its crowds with the way it laces well-loved familiarity and freshness. More than the mainstream parade of pasalubong stops and perpetually packed lechon lanes stretches a culinary scene that feels thoughtful and original—one built on slow breakfasts, smoky suppers, and comforting classics that locals and tourists are bound to come back to.
During Grab’s recent “Saya ng 5-Star Summer” discovery circuit and media coverage, that evolving travel and dining culture came into focus. Intentionally designed to foreground crowd favorites, the campaign shines a spotlight on community-trusted restaurants through Grab 5-Star Eats: a carefully curated food guide featuring restaurants highly rated—and frequented—by millions of bona fide, real users of the ride-hailing platform. Beyond the hype and popularity badge, the recognition reflects service, consistency, safety, and the pull of meals people repeatedly return for—whether for celebratory spreads, catch-up sessions, or casual comfort food after a filling day. Alongside the dining arm is the Grab 5-Star Travel Guide, too, which rounds up top-rated destinations, dining spots, and encounters selected to make trips more discovery-driven.

Besides buzzwords and beaches, the Queen City of the South flourishes on all fronts—from eats to experiences and other outings. Over the course of the trip, what continued to stand out wasn’t just sunshine or scenery; it was the sheer fabric of flavors folded into the city’s identity. From Tightrope Coffee’s mind-blowing brews to Sal’s Kitchen’s burger mashups, AA BBQ’s gastronomic seafood grills, and Tavolata’s premium Italian pastas, these culinary touchpoints lingered long after the taste and aroma. Some were plainspoken and straightforward; others were stylized and overindulgent. Together, they showed a side of Cebu that never truly fades—despite how fleeting the detour was.
Tightrope Coffee
Paseo Saturnino, Banilad, Cebu City
At Tightrope Coffee, specialty coffee takes center stage through thoughtfully crafted cups and comfort-forward creations. Best known for its brutalist, industrial interiors and artisan-oriented approach, the restaurant embeds elevated recipes in familiar formats—making it a must-visit sip venue for slow mornings, midday meetings, or caffeine-fueled conversations. Its ambience also lends itself to laid-back lunches, breather moments, and reflective musings at the core of the city.

One standout is their signature opener, the Himalayan Latte (₱220). It’s salty-sweet with a creamy texture, complementing the espresso effortlessly. Plus, its hint of oak flavor isn’t overly heavy, nurturing a more nuanced take on the traditional coffee shop classic. Paired with a slice of Basque Burnt Cheesecake (₱280), the pour reads indulgent in the right ways. The cheesecake warmly arrives as a saccharine charmer, softly caramelized around the edges. It exhibits that foundational burnt finish while remaining velvety, rich, and tender.

For something more substantial, the Beef Tapa (₱530) delivers a deeply satisfying set through homemade tapas, eggs, pickles, spiced dip, and garlic rice. This gastronomic rendition was definitely a star, projecting exclusive flavors that feel like an interplay of lush, sharp, and savory notes courtesy of the vinegar contrast. Meanwhile, the cheesy Parmesan Truffle Fries (₱290) make up a crisp, salty-savory character best shared over stories with your barkada at noontime.

Sal’s Kitchen
P. Almendras Street, Mabolo, Cebu City
Sal’s Kitchen is where comfort food comes with a playful personality. Famed for its dressing-filled burgers, loaded buns, textured tacos, and smoke-kissed sausages, the kitchen leans into slow-simmered creativity without losing the intimate, street-style culture. The menu is mostly casual yet curated—perfect for spontaneous pig-outs and comfort cravings. Its easygoing energy makes every meetup a little more lively and thrilling as well through games like the giant jumbling tower or jenga.

My personal pick, the Bacon Jam Smash (₱360), is made for self-confessed bacon lovers. Bursting with charred succulence, its subtle sweetness surrounds the juicy beef patty and the bacon jam. If served with a side of French Fries (₱150), the evening equation can feel complete.

On the other hand, the Pork Pibil Tacos (₱250 for 4 pieces) and Pollo Tacos (₱250 for 4 pieces) offer punchy flavors packed in soft shells, making them a must-try. For sharing crews, the Shrimp Poppers (₱520 for 10 pieces) serve crisp, snackable bites best paired with drinks and a playlist. The Sausage Plates (₱240 for a single serving) also acts as a homey heavyweight for diners looking for a dish that fills them up.

Beyond these pulutan treats, the brand’s signature house specials—including the Cheeseburger (₱240), Cheeseburger Deluxe (₱260), Chili Cheese Dog (₱240), and Braised Pork Belly Bun (₱260)—continue to illustrate the restaurant’s ability to recreate familiar fast-food staples into stylized indulgences.

AA BBQ
Andres Abellana Street, Guadalupe, Cebu City
Cebu’s homegrown dining hotspot AA BBQ takes shape through seafood paluto and Pinoy staples. A go-to grill territory, the restaurant thrives on simple servings and flavor-first meals that manage to draw hungry diners across different ages. Its friendly, no-frills atmosphere only adds to the charm—letting the cuisine do the talking without the distraction. With its turo-turo-style selections and spacious seating, the place presents a classic take on communal Filipino dining with a fusion of elevated elements.

To me, the Beef Kare-Kare (₱350, good for 2 to 3 persons) is a major scene-stealer, prepared with a thick, peanut butter-rich sauce that soaks robust bites with a pronounced profile. Generous without becoming greasy, this version ties the creaminess and umami to the core. Another memorable act is the Pork Sisig (₱260, good for 2 to 3 persons). Though traditionally connected to Kapampangan cuisine, AA BBQ’s Cebuano counterpart holds its own hometown originality.

Seafood seekers, meanwhile, may gravitate toward the Baked Scallops (₱200 for 8 pieces), which gives a cheesy-salty contrast. The Chorizo (₱75 per stick, 6 pieces) also makes for an addictive side—resembling a savory local-style longganisa—only rounder, oilier, and skewered on sticks for seamless sharing. Finally, wash down the weightiness with a fresh Fruit Shake (₱135) that cuts through the density of the grilled dishes.

Tavolata
A.S. Fortuna Street, Banilad, Cebu City
For Italian feasts that feel equal parts elegant and personal, Tavolata is your invitation. Considered one of the city’s culinary stops for specialty cuisine, the restaurant sports a rather sophisticated corner—characterized by a bundle of pasta, pizza, and dessert numbers. Design-wise, its towering walls are softened by subtle lighting and architectural layouts, giving gatherings a touch of intimacy despite the interior’s expanse. Here, evenings transform ordinary interactions into occasion-worthy moments as well.

Among the attention-grabbers is the gooey Fettuccine Bolognese (₱775), a dish that dips prime beef and pork ragù into rich tomato-forward flavors topped with parmesan. Equally popular is the Margherita (₱725), a hand-tossed highlight showcasing simplicity through the fior di latte, fragrant basil, and olive oil oozing over a blistered crust. The Diavola (₱775), in contrast, takes a smokier, spicier punch with Calabrian sausages, chili, and pepperoncini.
To cap off the evening with confectionary sweetness, delights such as the Vanilla Bean Crème Brûlée (₱575) stuns with a sugar shell that cracks upon contact, while the Warm Chocolate Torte (₱575) treat wields crunchy walnuts and a velvety crème anglaise—creating a voluptuous, more decadent finale that tickles every meal ending. Together, these familiar dishes mark an unmistakably upscale dining destination.

Between Cebu’s bustling business districts and breezy coastal corners, there is something for every palate, and each space tells a different story of the city’s dining scene. From Filipino classics to contemporary fusions, Cebu’s culinary tapestry continues to draw diners into flavors that feel immersive, memorable, and mouthwatering.
